Studio 60 is a great show, and in most ways a very solid show. I agree with some of the points discussed in the article. They've set themselves up as great television and the only part that's really stellar is the behind the scences, SportsNightesque material. The sketches aren't funny and that has been a drag for the show, especially in Episodes 2-4.
Having said that, that is only a couple of episodes. Not every show has to develop at breakneck speed, and the fact that most do nowadays is what leads to their early demise. The pilot was great and the most recent episode I've seen (the episode after The West Coast delay) was one of the best hours of TV I have ever seen. I felt it showed human intricacies in a way that was very palpable to me.
I could never get into West Wing (and I am a political fiend!) there was something about it that didn't work for me, it didn't ring true about human nature whereas I feel Studio 60 does, Sportsnight did too, though it was too hit or miss.
How many times have I done really well behind the scenes on a project at work only to f$^# it up in front of people in an effort to be savvy? Not a lot to be sure, but enough to know what Jordan feels like when asked if she knew about the drug thing and replies, "Uh I don't really remember I was high at the time." The show is well written and well casted and that's about all you can ask for. I have no doubt the funnier sketches will come, but if they don't? No big loss.
