I would like to take this time to clarify my position on Ms. Spears...
It is shit like this that rolls the women's movement completely backwards. Her classification is now "pop tart" and it couldn't be more accurate. She exploits her body for financial gain and when asked about it dawns a coy smile and says "I don't think I try to be sexy." Oh I see so you wear that much makeup and that scant amount of clothing everywhere you go? Okay.
I get so irritated by the fact that she is making money out the whazoo too! What has she contributed to humanity? A couple of dance moves and a penchant for sequins? Sorry if I don't feel like that is much in comparison to the soldiers, the teachers, the firemen, and the do-gooders of the world.
Moreover, her primary audience is young girls... What message does this send to them? Strap on a cute skirt and some heels and get noticed? Fine in showbiz I guess, but in real life it isn't that easy, and while you might get something out of it, you'll never have the most important thing. Respect!
I was watching a rerun of Judging Amy yesterday, where the parents of a 16 year old girl were fighting over her right to have a breast enhancement and Amy's clerk (the really good-looking black guy whose name I cannot remmeber right now) gets up and storms out of the mediation when they ask if he has a daughter. He says that he does and that he recognizes that a child is a gift, and that a little girl is a special gift because women have been undervalued for centuries. Then he says something to the effect of "and I pray every day that she will grow up to find people who respect her and value her for who she is and what she can accomplish and that she realizes that anyone who objectifies her or somehow treats her as less than that isn't worth her time -- isn't worth the space they take up on this planet."
Are you listening Britney?
